Comprehensive Guide to the 2024 Tariff Adjustments for Nigeria’s Electricity Distribution Companies

Comprehensive Guide to the 2024 Tariff Adjustments for Nigeria's Electricity Distribution Companies

In a recent announcement by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), significant changes are on the horizon for electricity tariffs across Nigeria. Starting January 2024, new rates will be implemented for the 11 electricity distribution companies (DisCos) that operate within the country. This decision underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining energy affordability amidst economic fluctuations. Here, we delve into the details of these changes, the implications for consumers, and how you can efficiently manage your electricity purchases through platforms like LightNG.

Understanding the Tariff Hike for Nigeria’s Electricity Sectors

NERC’s Announcement and Its Implications

On January 17, NERC Chairman Sanusi Garba revealed the commission’s decision to approve new electricity tariffs for the 11 DisCos, effective from the start of 2024. These adjustments stem from various economic factors including changes in inflation rates, Naira/US dollar exchange rates, and gas-to-power prices. Previously, tariff adjustments were made semi-annually under the Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO), with major reviews scheduled every five years. However, this new structure introduces monthly reviews, promising more dynamic responses to economic conditions.

The Role of Government in Electricity Subsidies

To ease the transition to new tariffs, the Federal Government has pledged to subsidize these rates, ensuring that customers will continue to pay the current prices throughout 2024. This subsidy is substantial, totaling approximately N1.6 trillion for the year. This approach not only shields consumers from immediate price increases but also stabilizes the energy market during the transition period.

Detailed Breakdown of New Tariffs and Subsidies

Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC)

For AEDC, the cost-reflective tariff has been set at N120.88 per kilowatt-hour (kWh). However, consumers will be charged only N63.24/kWh, thanks to a N58.12/kWh subsidy by the government. The total subsidy for AEDC customers in 2024 amounts to roughly N233.26 billion, equating to about N19.44 billion each month.

Ikeja Electric

Customers of Ikeja Electric will see a cost-reflective tariff of N128.18/kWh, while the subsidized rate will be N56.6/kWh. This leaves a shortfall of N53.5/kWh that the government will cover. The estimated subsidy benefit for Ikeja Electric customers totals approximately N238.201 billion for the year, or N19.85 billion monthly.

Ibadan Distribution Company (DisCo)

For those under the Ibadan DisCo, the subsidy for 2024 is projected to be around N199.841 billion, which translates to a monthly benefit of N16.65 billion.
